How does piezoelectric motor work?

Why the Piezoelectric ceramic element can be used in many industries?
Because after we produced a big Piezoelectric chip, then we can cut it to be small pcs to install in many sensors, ultrasonic products, tiny displacement industry(piezoelectric motor).

Ultrasonic product and sensors, many people know it well because we can see it in daily use. But what is tiny displacement application? In fact, tiny displacement means move extremely small distance each time. For example every time only move several nanometer to several micrometer.

Piezoelectric motor working principle

what device needs piezoelectric mortor driving tiny movement?

Cameras and surveillance lenses: autofocus, optical image stabilization
Super-resolution microscopes: sample stage movement, Z-axis focusing
Semiconductor lithography with micro-adjustment platform
Scanning electron microscopes (SEM), transmission electron microscopes (TEM)
Surgical robots: minimally invasive instruments with micro-joint actuation
B-mode/color Doppler ultrasound probes: ultrasonic lens focusing
Satellite-borne lens attitude adjustment
Micro-antenna actuation
Coordinate measuring machine, precision length measuring instruments,
Micro-valve control

How does the piezoelectric motor work for nano meter tiny movement? And at same time it can keep very fast speed? We can see below picture.

ultrasonic motor working principle

Becuase we already know the Reverse piezoelectric effect, now on below piezoelectric motor, there are four electrodes, we input two alternating currents, and make it 90 degree phase difference. It will cause the Piezoelectric cermaic expan and shrank in different directions, then it push the chip moving. Finally it can make top round part move with oval steps. Every step moves with only several nanometer, but we make it very high frequency moves, then it can move very fast, even it can reach 100mm one second.

So it can service for many high precision devices. Can move fast, also can control to be tiny distance in one step. Its really interesting electronic parts.
